Od jugoslavenske arhivske terminologije do suvremenog hrvatskoga arhivskoga nazivlja
From Yugoslav Archival Terminology to Contemporary Croatian Archival Terminology

Summary/Abstract: Correct use of language is a prerequisite for any profession, therefore this paper analyses some ambiguous terms specific to the archival profession. When analysing the presented examples, we used standard language normative manuals (dictionaries, grammars, orthographies) and language advisory manuals, and all examples were additionally verified in the Archival Dictionary – Croatian-English / English-Croatian, a more recent addition to archival terminology, which is also in line with the solutions we propose in the paper. Most of the terms analysed have been used in the archival profession since the Dictionary of Archival Terminology of Yugoslavia from 1972, and are not in accordance with the norm of the Croatian standard language. In the aforementioned Dictionary, Croatian and Serbian lexemes are almost equal, and the only obvious difference is in the script (the use of Cyrillic for Serbian, and Latin for Croatian terminology). In addition, special emphasis is on the process of linguistic borrowing, i.e., on the too easy and too frequent adoption of foreign words, even if an appropriate replacement can be found in Croatian, which in the long term distorts a good feel for the Croatian language among native speakers. The aim of this paper, in which selected examples from the field of archival activities are analysed, is to show that some of the widely adopted terms are obsolete, inherited, and established in practice by inertia, and should be replaced with more correct, simpler, more logical and more functional ones.
