Preface

Summary/Abstract: The studies and articles featured in Volume 40 of the Proceedings of the Institute for Historical Studies are expanded versions of papers presented at the scientific conference Traditions and Modernity: Bulgarian Society in the ‘Long Nineteenth Century’, held in Sofia on 5–6 October 2023. The published materials focus on a broad range of issues concerning the history of the Bulgarians during the transition to the Modern Age. The authors and compilers do not claim to have exhausted the rich and complex issues surrounding the modernization of Bulgarian society during the ‘long nineteenth century’. However, they hope that the questions raised and the new sources introduced will spark the interest of researchers from across the humanities and encourage them to further explore this multifaceted field of study.
