Summary/Abstract: Suicide is any death caused by intentional and/or purposeful self-harm. Although it is not a diagnosis or a disease, it is considered as one of the major public health challenges affecting individuals and communities worldwide and has become a psychological, economic, social and medical problem. The high number of suicide victims is one of the reasons the World Health Organization developed the Comprehensive Mental Health Strategy Plan for the period 2013–2020, that aims to reduce global suicide mortality by 10% between 2012 and 2020. The task of the plan is to improve mental health services and ensure that people with mental illness have access to effective and affordable treatment. The plan outlines a series of goals and targets that aim to reduce the global burden of mental illness and promote mental well-being. This article discusses suicide risk factors, suicidal risk, and reviews past research on suicide.
