Summary/Abstract: The aim of the research was to examine the social motivation for sport. More precisely, the aim of the research is to examine the motivation for sports activities of students. During the research, a measuring instrument constructed by Campbell and Willis (1992) was used, which was modified for the purposes of this research. Campbell and Willis (1992) included 13 motives for examining motives for recreational sports, while in this study 11 motives were included: health, ability, vitality, body mass, beauty, relaxation, mood, companionship, achievement, lifestyle and money. The measuring instrument that was used was a five-point Likert-type scale. The sample of respondents consisted of students (197 in total) from Republika Srpska. The age of the respondents ranged from 19 to 25 years (AS = 20.45). The stated age range of the respondents indicates that the research included respondents from the population of younger adulthood. The survey included more female respondents (167 respondents or 84.77%) than male respondents (30 respondents or 15.23%). The number of respondents who practiced sports is 114 (57.87%), and those who did not are 83 (42.13%). Before examining the manifestation of motivation for sports activities, the structure of the scale was determined by means of exploratory factor analysis, with Direct Oblimin rotation, which examined the motivation for sports activities. The obtained results showed that the used scale contains three subscales, that is, that the motivation for sports activities contains three dimensions, and they relate to the following: 1) psychological and physical well-being (mood, relaxation, health, ability and vitality), 2) affirmation and affiliation (money, achievement, lifestyle and socializing) and 3) physical appearance (body mass and beauty). When examining the expression of motives for sports activities, it was determined that the motives for psychological and physical well-being (health, mood, relaxation and ability) were expressed to the highest extent. The following motives were least expressed: lifestyle and money. When examining the differences in the expression of motives for sports activities, it was determined that the motive for psychological and physical well-being is significantly more pronounced in respondents who play sports than in those who do not play sports (U = 3347.500, Z = -3.536, p = .000). It was also determined that the motivation for affirmation and affiliation was manifested to a significantly higher extent among respondents who play sports than among respondents who do not play sports (U = 3886.000, - 2.145, p = .032). When it comes to the manifestation of a motive directed at physical appearance, no significant differences were found between people who do and don't do sports (U = 4115.500, z = -1.603, p = .109). The manifestation of motives for playing sports is in agreement with the results of earlier research, in which it was determined that psychological and physical well-being, that is, health, are the motives for which respondents decide to engage in sports activities to the highest extent. Earlier research was focused to a greater extent on studies of the population involved in sports activities, and these research findings would be useful for further conducting research on the motivation for sports of people who play and do not play sports, and further on the procedures of motivating those who are not involved in sports activities.
