Summary/Abstract: The ninth decade of the 20th century is characterised by the intersection of modern and postmodern concepts in Serbian literature. In spite of the fact that the political system of former Yugoslavia at those times was still predominantly atheistic (that system facing gradual collapse), an interest in religion started visibly gaining momentum. In such a context, a series of Serbian novels emerged that dealt with the topic of the religiously marked Middle Ages using different narrative modes. Theoretically, these narratives can be explained by Leidulf Melve's statements about the dominant narratives regarding the Middle Ages, as well as Umberto Eco's concept of ten types of Middle Ages. Savićević's novels (The Story of the Battle of Kosovo and The Letter), predominantly use a metaphysical, eschatological narrative mode in their depiction of the Middle Ages, where the appearance of Orthodox spirituality as a possible and acceptable reality of the world of diegesis, makes Savićević's portrayal of the Middle Ages very contemporary, even pioneering, in the socio-historical context of former Yugoslavia in the late 80’s of the 20th century.
