“Collectivity of the religious elite and secular leaders under the oversight of the state”

Summary/Abstract: Even with the initial decisions made by the Austro-Hungarian administration regarding the establishment of the domestic Islamic community, a duality emerged as one of its main organizational features. Although this aspect has already been recognized i. e. presented in Bosnian historiography, the essence of the overlapping between culture and politics, as illustrated by collective and interdependent institutions, has been most fully expressed in the scientific methods and works of Adnan Jahić, a Bosnian historian and lecturer at the University of Tuzla. His interest in various aspects of the history of the Islamic community in Bosnia and Herzegovina has resulted in hundreds of pages of scholarly material focused on the relationship between religious (clergy) and waqfmearif (secular) organizations during the Austro-Hungarian administration. This relationship is revealed through the personalities and functionaries of diverse social, ideological, and cultural backgrounds who shaped the image of the Islamic community during that period. They occasionally demonstrated its comprehensive strength while often contributing to a significant “gap and breach between the sabor and the rijaset.”
