Summary/Abstract: The information about the Bulgarian language courses taught at the academic level in Japan is limited and we could hardly find any research on the topic. While not as widespread as the study of major global languages such as English, Chinese, or Spanish, Bulgarian language and culture have found their place within certain academic institutions, particularly in the context of Slavic and Eastern European studies. The present study provides an overview of the current state and the future perspectives for Bulgarian language studies in Japan. It aims to identify the academic institutions offering Bulgarian language courses and examines the curriculum design, the instructional methods, and the course materials used in these programs. The analysis is based on academic records from six Japanese universities, supplemented by a review of their syllabi and a questionnaire survey conducted among lecturers of Bulgarian language at these institutions.
