Summary/Abstract: This article examines the architectural design of wooden articular churches built in the 17th and 18th centuries in what is now Slovakia. These churches, built following the 1681 Congress of Sopron, deviate from traditional Western Christian church layouts. The article explores the origin of the cruciform plan adopted by these churches, proposing that it was imported, possibly from the Calvinist milieu of Amsterdam, or through Scandinavian influences. The author analyzes the reasons for the adoption of this plan, including both symbolic and practical considerations related to the Protestant emphasis on the preached word and the availability of building materials. The article also discusses the construction methods and evolution of this architectural style, along with its influence on subsequent church construction in other regions.
