Summary/Abstract: Music plays a vital role in the context of psychological, social, and cultural development of an individual, and listening to music is one of the most important leisure activities. This research aims to investigate whether the functions of listening to music in the lives of students vary according to their year of study/age, country of origin, completed secondary education, and participation in music in their free time. The survey was conducted online with a sample of 344 participants, comprising students of teacher education and early and preschool education from Croatia, Serbia, Montenegro, and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The research employed a questionnaire to collect …sociodemographic data and a shortened version of the Adaptive Functions of Music Listening Scale. The results of the research confirmed that neither the year of study/age nor playing music in free time is a significant predictor of music listening functions. Differences in the functions of listening to music were observed depending on the country of origin and completed secondary education. The obtained results have significant implications for the theory and practice of music pedagogy and psychology of music.
