DŽAMIJA – SIMBOL MUSLIMANSKOG IDENTITETA
THE MOSQUE – A SYMBOL OF MUSLIM IDENTITY

Summary/Abstract: In this article, the author thematises the mosque as a multilayered architectural phenomenon that incorporates communicational, symbolic, and functional aspects, focusing on the Islamic architectural heritage of Sandžak. From its earliest form in the time of the Messenger Muhammad s.w.s. to its contemporary architectural expression, the mosque plays a key role in preserving Muslims’ spiritual and cultural identity. The article has a particular focus on the three significant mosques in Sandžak: Arap-džamija mosque, Altun-Alem džamija mosque, and Validej-džamija mosque in Sjenica. Amongst these, AltunAlem džamija mosque in Novi Pazar is the most significant, not only because of its exceptional Ottoman architectural style or its cultural and historical values, but also because in the graveyard within its vicinity, the mufti of Sandžak, Muamer-ef. Zukorlić places additional symbolic significance for Bosniak Muslims of Sandžak, diaspora and the region. This makes this mosque a place of collective memory and identity confirmation.
