Summary/Abstract: This paper explores a modern perspective on the concepts of security and terrorism as phenomena and security challenges as well as the use of media for public information and its contribution to increasing the level of security. Contemporary society and high levels of globalization place all security-relevant events worldwide in the spotlight, with mass media serving as a fundamental and powerful means for the rapid transmission of crucial information, especially related to security issues, and battling modern forms of violence. Many institutions have long recognised the power of media, the importance of “breaking news” and have therefore worked on creating conditions for adequate reporting from areas affected by security events, the “unwanted” ones such as terrorist attacks, unrest, and wartime conditions in particular. They have also worked on creating conditions for raising awareness of security culture to a higher level. There is a possibility that any state or institution could become a target of terrorism, thereby drawing media and public attention and requiring readiness. Security-related activities and crisis management organisations require individuals in both security and media fields to build positive public perception, instil trust in institutional systems, and maintain the necessary level of public discipline to effectively manage crises, particularly in areas affected by terrorist attacks.
