The First Version of the Akathistos Hymn Printed in Romanian: Reflections on a Little-Known Book by Metropolitan Dosoftei

Summary/Abstract: The second half of the seventeenth century has rightly been described as “the true age of the Romanian Renaissance.” Although translation remained a central concern of intellectuals, its motivations had shifted beyond the earlier Protestant impulse, giving way to a broader interest in literary diversity and emerging aesthetic sensibilities. It is within this cultural climate that the first Romanian edition of the Akathistos Hymn appeared, included in a small, elegant prayer book printed in Uniev in 1673 by Metropolitan Dosoftei, who was also the translator of the text. This study examines the contents of the book, the surviving copies, and relevant prosopographical data on Dosoftei, while highlighting distinctive features of his translation.
