Summary/Abstract: This conference report summarizes the 60th Essen Discussions on State and Church held in Mülheim an der Ruhr from March 16-18, 2025. The conference, attended by nearly 100 experts from various German universities, church authorities, and governmental institutions, as well as representatives from Austria and the Czech Republic, focused on categorical pastoral care. The report highlights presentations on the irreplaceable role of religion and rituals in society, particularly in crisis situations, and the constitutional legal framework governing categorical pastoral care in Germany. Presentations also covered pastoral care in the military, police, hospitals, and prisons. The importance of the confidentiality of confession and its relation to religious freedom and human dignity was emphasized. Professor Tomáš Halík's work on the topic was frequently cited.
