Officium of the Governor of the Province of Dalmatia: An Overview and Examples of Published Inscriptions

Summary/Abstract: This article examines the bureaucratic apparatus that managed the provincial administration of the Roman Empire, specifically focusing on the province of Dalmatia. The research is based on primary sources, including literary works and inscriptions, and secondary sources to contextualize the findings. The study spans from the suppression of the Batonian revolt (6–9 AD) to the final division of the Roman Empire in 395 AD. The article begins by discussing the role of the provincial governor, whose office (officium) was the main administrative body. The officium included various officials such as the princeps officii, cornicularius, and commentariensis, each with specific administrative and judicial duties. The article also explores the financial administration managed by tabularii and numerarii.
