Summary/Abstract: The purpose of the article was to show several important problems of penitentiarysystem in Poland. At the beginning there is a short description of penitentiary system ingeneral and particular types of penitentiary units. The article highlights several aspectsof penitentiary service officer profession, including the state of permanent danger andmental fatigue that officers have to deal with. It also describes the biggest problems ofpenitentiary system in Poland in general, naming overpopulation as one of the most ur-gent issues in need of systematic solution. Corruption and overflow of illegal substancesamong prisoners are also described as matters in need of taking urgent measures. Thearticle poses important question, whether penitentiary system in Poland, being oppressiveand flawed institution, is able to fulfill its main purpose – which is prisoners’ resocialization.
