Summary/Abstract: Within the framework of literary emotionology, this article explores the affective potential of Ivo Andrić’s short story collection “Children” (Deca) in literature teaching, in relation to the topic of emotional literacy – a psychological concept associated with the acquisition of fundamental emotional knowledge and understanding of emotions. The paper does not rely on any specific psychologi cal model of emotional literacy but, through an analysis of emotional constructs in the stories from the collection, seeks to offer literature teachers interpretive approaches that can, in primary school literature classes, neutralize pupils’ emo tional experiences by referencing the emotional experiences of literary charac ters. It also aims to encourage critical reflection on prevailing social prejudices about children’s emotions in Bosnian Herzegovinian society, such as: “children, because they are still small, do not feel or understand what is happening around them,” “girls are naturally more emotional than boys,” and “emotions are private and should not be shared.” These represent aspects of fundamental emotional knowledge – attitudes and perceptions of emotions – that serve as a prerequisite for developing different dimensions of emotional literacy, which is the main focus of this paper.
