Summary/Abstract: This dossier examines the evolving role of ontology in contemporary philosophy and related disciplines. Almost a century and a half ago, Engels predicted in Ludwig Feuerbach and the End of Classical German Philosophy that philosophy would be confined to the “empire of pure thought,” focusing on logic and dialectics while being expelled from nature and history. Contrary to Engels’ prophecy, the subsequent evolution of philosophy demonstrates a persistent and even intensified engagement with ontology. From Marxist philosophy (e.g., Lukács, Ilyenkov) to French Theory (Deleuze, Badiou, Laruelle) and contemporary currents such as speculative realism and new materialism, ontological inquiry remains central. Even applied and interdisciplinary fields—including cyberactivism, cosmopolitics, and information sciences—reflect this ontological resurgence. The dossier invites reflection on whether this revival is intrinsic to philosophical discourse or a product of contemporary historical conditions.
