Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of author’s 50-year long research on the psychological mechanisms of health and disease in a functional approach that began with her work at the Haematology Clinic of the Medical Academy of Krakow – headed by Professor Julian Aleksandrowicz – an outstanding humanist. The author’s pioneering research among patients with leukaemia and healthy people, shows the essence of health/disease dichotomy as a function of creative coping with stress by using one’s own subjective resources. The results thereof seen in the patients after a bone marrow transplant – based on the Functional Model of Health (FMZ) by Wrona-Polańska (2003) – have important theoretical and applied significance. They show multiple determinants and psychological mechanisms of functional health and indicate the important supporting and motivating role of the psychologist. Professor Aleksandrowicz drew attention to this mechanism employing a psychologist at the Haematology Clinic, to whom he attributed a significant role in the interdisciplinary dialogue with the patient.
