Outdated enlightenment conception: libraries in focus of the Union of writers of Yougoslavia

Summary/Abstract: This paper initially analyzes attempts to establish a special library within the Association of Writers of Yugoslavia. Despite significant efforts and extensive acquisition of books and magazines, the library was never established. The paper further presents a discussion held within the Association of Writers of Yugoslavia concerning the “book crisis” and the prevailing attitude towards libraries as cultural institutions. This discussion culminated in a writer’s proposal to abolish libraries, viewing them as an obstacle to the development of reading awareness and the broader role of books in society.
