Summary/Abstract: The article reflects on the possibility of reading historical literature by non-specialists,including students. Following Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht and Ryszard Nycz, the authorforegrounds that a fundamental change is currently happening in how readers approachthe past and the present, shifting emphasis toward living in the present. Under theseconditions, reading old Polish literary texts challenges pedagogical and social practice.Some propose the solution is to abandon such readings. The author opposes this ideaand emphasizes the importance of old Polish culture and literature. After Italo Calvinoand Paweł Mościcki, he provides two justifications for his approach. Thus, the textadvocates for consistent reading of old Polish literature in school, which can only providean understanding of the present by explaining its historical sources and conditions.
