Summary/Abstract: The present study analyzes the text of the Canon of the Lamentation of the Mother of God at the Crucifixion of the Savior, included in the service of the Compline on Holy and Great Friday. It affirms the identity of Simeon “the Logothete”, presented as the author, with St. Simeon Metaphrastes (10th century), and highlights hymnographic similarities between the pattern adopted in composing this canon and those present on other days of Holy Week, as well as in other liturgical periods. Finally, the study advocates for rejecting a possible accusation of “emotionalism” that might be associated with the dramatic style of the composition, suggesting an approach from a spiritual and pedagogical perspective, in the light of the hope brought by the Resurrection, which gives ultimate meaning.
