Summary/Abstract: This article examines sources which purportedly attest to the use of mola salsa for theconsecration of a grain product (libum) during Roman sacrificial rites. While such a practice didexist, it was rare, perhaps restricted to private worship. Moreover, ancient testimonies indicate thatsuch an act was not considered immolatio. The author of the paper proposes the hypothesis that forthe Romans it was essential to deliberately produce a libum so that it would meet traditional culticrequirements and be regarded as a Roman offering. Such the procedure could be done as part ofa sacrificial ceremony itself, but more often it was handled by special priestly personnel (fictores). In addition, liba could be purchased from the appropriate vendors (libarii).
