Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses the problems of preservation and conservation of stone monuments situated in the open. The discussed monuments are made of variety of limestones. The rapid dilapidation of these monuments is easily observed during the past few decades. It is effected by various factors representing a combination of complex physical and chemical influences damaging the stone. In majority of cases it is difficult to establish the ratio of influence of various factors on dilapidation process given that physical degradation effects further chemical disintegration since it extends the affected area and enables easier access of water, air pollution and other agents, especially biohazardous ones. In order to ensure successful preservation and conservation of the monuments in the open, it is necessary to apply various measures of prevention and practical conservation interventions. The conservation practice comprises di verse methods used for this purpose. With time, they proved to be more or less successful. In order to achieve optimal results in this field it is necessary to continuously improve and test these methods so that the measures would in no way produce negative effects. It is important to emphasise that all substances and means used in the process of preservation of stone monuments must not in any way affect the stone or change its physical quality.
