The political and social conditions of magnate artistic patronage in the early modern Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (16th–17th centuries)

Summary/Abstract: This article is an attempt to look at the problem of magnate artistic patronage in the modern Rzeczpospolita of the 16th and 17th centuries from a broader perspective than hitherto: taking into account the political and social conditions of this phenomenon, the problem of the klientela system, the magnate court and the patron-artist relationship. Examples of the patronage activity of Krzysztof “the Orphan” Radziwiłł, Jan Zamoyski and Stanisław Lubomirski show the process of formation of modern magnate courts and their artistic structures, i.e. the birth of a modern model of artistic patronage within the circle of the then elite of power.
