Summary/Abstract: Aim: Portugal, which remained neutral during the Second World War and was predominantly Catholic, offered a relatively free media environment in relation to wartime reporting. This article aims to determine whether: (a) the situation in Catholic-dominated Warsaw during the 1944 Uprising was reported on in the Catholic daily Novidades; (b) how frequently this leading Portuguese newspaper covered the Uprising; (c) how it was described; and (d) what sources were used. Methods: The article employs an analytical-synthetic approach, along with press content analysis and media discourse analysis. Results and Cognitive Value: The study reveals Novidades’ stance towards the Warsaw Uprising, the frequency and intensity of its reporting during the period of active combat, and in the immediate aftermath. It also sheds light on the nature of wartime information reaching the Portuguese public and the Catholic media’s engagement with events in occupied Poland.
