Summary/Abstract: Tokarczuk’s stance on the natural world seems to have much in common with that of Yourcenar,who is now widely recognised as an avant-garde environmentalist writer. In comparing the twowriters, I seek to focus on the issue of animal suffering, one of the leitmotifs in their work. I wantto deepen this topic by considering two novels of the authors, in particular, Drive Your PlowOver the Bones of the Dead and An Obscure Man. I shall examine these works in the light of thephilosophy of deep ecology and also by using the tools of ecopoetics.
