Summary/Abstract: For centuries, surgical procedures were performed by untrained bone-setters and leeches. The invention of gunpowder and firearms in the 14th-15th centuries led to these individuals solely caring for the wounded, their treatments based on personal discretion. Formal surgical training within academia forced adaptation to humoral physiology and pathology. This study examines how medical theory influenced surgeons' treatment of gunshot wounds, analyzing ten 16th-century writings on firearm injuries – a time when firearms were common and standardized procedures existed. The study documents how treatment methods were influenced by Paracelsism and highlights the growing importance of early modern empiricism.
