Summary/Abstract: We are studying the period of the 15th and 16th centuries, the theologically and historically “decisive centre” whence Russian tradition derives its identity. This is a time of a revival of ecclesial life based on the patristic tradition. We trace the influence of Greek Fathers – Russian specificity is unthinkable without them – following the figure of Joseph of Volokolamsk (with regard to the current of Nilus of Sora). The roots of the spiritual renewal lie deep in the beginning of Eastern monasticism, outside of Russia, but the Russian proprium took its shape in this period.
