Summary/Abstract: In an increasingly interconnected and complex global landscape, the interplay between bilateral and multilateral relations has become a cornerstone of international diplomacy. While multilateralism emphasises collective action and global cooperation, bilateral relations in defence offer unique advantages that complement and enhance the broader multilateral framework. In today’s interconnected world, the dynamics of international diplomacy are intricately woven, with nations navigating complex political, economic, and security landscapes. Multilateralism, as a concept, thrives on inclusivity, promoting collective action through large-scale agreements, alliances, and global organisations like the United Nations or NATO. It emphasises universal cooperation to address broad issues such as climate change, global health, and international security. However, while multilateralism is crucial for tackling these global challenges, its scope often comes with limitations. Consensus-building in multilateral settings can be slow, as the diverse interests of multiple stakeholders must align. This is where bilateral relations in defence shine as a complementary and sometimes primary approach.
