Summary/Abstract: Over the centuries, the practice of the sacrament of penance has evolved multiple times.Often, there were disputes between diocesan clergy and religious orders regarding the juris-diction to hear confessions. By its nature, it was an individualized event, additionally coveredby discretion, and at the same time defined by certain general norms set by ecclesiastical law.The confessor was obliged to comply with various legal texts, which over time became part ofthe forming of Corpus Iuris Canonici. A fundamental provision in this respect was canon 21 ofthe Fourth Lateran Council – Omnis utriusque sexus. The analysis of the Wroclaw Tractatus deproprio sacerdote, as well as other theological-legal texts conducted in this article, shows thatthe canon constituting the legal culture of the medieval confessor were moreover the decreesDudum a Bonifacio. Super cathedram and Vas electionis. This collection was further expandedby other papal bulls, various commentaries, glosses, summas, and penitential treatises.
