Summary/Abstract: The evacuation of Allied airmen in 1944, organized by the Yugoslav Army in the Homeland (JVuO), was not just a military operation but also a propaganda action aimed at the United States to change the policy of exclusive support for the Partisans. During the Cold War, the Chetnik emigration in America particularly emphasized the „Halyard Mission“ as unequivocal evidence of the JVuO fight on the side of the Western Allies. In transitional Serbia, the „Halyard Mission“ is used in the process of political rapprochement with the United States, which itself participates in shaping memorial culture. One of the prominent symbols of this process is the creation of the „Icon Halyard“, painted in the style of traditional Orthodox icons. It seeks to legitimize long-term current demands for Serbian-American political rapprochement based on the alliance in World War II. Further profiling of commemorative forms will depend on the political decisions of the United States and Serbia, directly influencing the overall public memory system, whether it will be retained within local frameworks or expanded to a broader national level.
