Summary/Abstract: The aim of this article is to discuss Jean-Luc Marion’s engagement withHeidegger’s “end of metaphysics” thesis. The French phenomenologist acknowledgesthe importance of Heidegger’s insights, particularly concerning the neglect of being andthe so-called ontological difference. At the same time, he identifies in Heidegger’s thoughtan insufficient elaboration of the formula “es gibt – cela donne.” Marion shares Heidegger’sunderstanding of the “end of metaphysics” thesis and the necessity of overcoming it. Yet,they differ with respect to the shape of philosophy “after metaphysics.” While for Heideggerthis meant a thinking of Being, Marion discerns in the notion of givenness a more originaryand radical phenomenality – one that conditions even Being itself. However, a concernarises: does such an absolute privileging of givenness not reintroduce metaphysics, orperhaps even theology, back into philosophy?
