Summary/Abstract: The circumstances (from the beginning of 19th century) in which the Macedonian national consciousness was formed are presented in this paper – in the framework of the relations between factions of various religions rooted in this country as the result of complex historical processes. The elements of this consciousness include convictions of a dialogic (or confrontational) nature and arguments in favour of the essential and closed faith identity of Macedonians. A source of ambiguity was the society’s structure formed in the Ottoman ethno-religious millet model, rivalry among neighbouring national Orthodox churches or Slavonic-Greek antagonism. Basis for phenomena such as Uniate movement, Protestant missions and communication channels between the Orthodox and Muslims proves that diverse forms of interaction in the past have had often purposes related to political opportunities. They also enriched the multiple collective experiences of coexistence of various faiths in their evolution towards the present institutional state.
