Summary/Abstract: This short introduction presents the contributions gathered in the issue. What is a center? What is a periphery? Our gaze is magnetized by power, and power resides in the capital—therefore, at the center of a state. That is where the elites live, those who manage social and political life, who impose their way of being, their fashions, their habits. So why focus on marginal areas, which are but a pale reflection of court life, where the rulers of the state are made and unmade?
