Summary/Abstract: By reading passages from the Holy Gospel according to John that affirm faith in relation to what we call reason, I propose an interpretation of Thomas’s „unbelief ” as a manifestation of the human will to love. Focusing on the role of reason in the work of faith, I will attempt to show, first, that religious faith necessarily involves the will, and second, how the transition occurs from „seeing with the eyes” to „seeing with the mind”. If physical sight is an act of the mind in its fallen state, then for the believer, „seeing with the mind” is an act of the mind purified by divine grace.
