Summary/Abstract: The post-1989 transformation of Eastern European cinema, marked by the shift from state socialism to global capitalism, fundamentally reshaped the region’s film industries. The neoliberal restructuring of post-communist societies created precarious conditions that disproportionately affected women, shaping the thematic focus of contemporary female filmmakers. Through semi-structured interviews, this study investigates the challenges faced by N = 7 women filmmakers in the Romanian film industry, particularly within the context of the Romanian New Wave Cinema. Findings reveal persistent gender imbalances, with women significantly underrepresented in key creative roles and often subjected to discrimination, limited funding, and sexual harassment. Despite increased participation and growing visibility, many women report having to work harder than their male counterparts to gain recognition, underscoring entrenched gendered assumptions in the industry. A notable turning point came with public acknowledgement of harassment, signaling emerging solidarity and awareness. The study concludes that addressing these challenges is essential not only for gender equity but also for the creative evolution of Romanian cinema. A more inclusive industry, both behind and in front of the camera, can foster richer, more authentic storytelling and help catalyze broader social change.
