Summary/Abstract: In 2005, the Turkish Government declared 2005 as African year. Reciprocal high level visits were made to sign economic and commercial agreements. The same year Turkey gained observer status in the African Union. A more important stage was the official confirmation of cooperation between Africa and Turkey during the Turkey-Africa Summit held in Istanbul in 2008. Turkey became the member of the African Development Bank. Again in 2008, during the Summit Meeting of the African Union, Turkey was confirmed as a strategic partner for the continent. In the meantime, Turkey decided to increase the number of her missions in Africa. Turkey had 15 embassies in Africa ,three of those were closed due to economic or security reasons. At the end of 2012, the number of Turkish Embassies in Africa was 34 with newly opened ones. In Ankara also the number of resident African embassies significantly increased in the light of developing relations.
