Summary/Abstract: The security implications of change in the Arctic – as the ice melts further by land and sea, and interest heats up in the newly accessible resources – have so far generally been discussed in negative terms. Unresolved disputes over territorial demarcation, and the ongoing build-up of most Arctic nations’ military capabilities, are cited as signs of an intensifying inter-state competition that might take a violent turn. Combined with this is the other dystopian vision of reckless economic exploitation aggravating the Arctic’s pollution problems, trampling over the rights of local peoples, and – eventually – further aggravating the impact of climate change both locally and worldwide.
