The translator’s image and competences in the age of machine translation and AI: Attitudes and perceptions of young non-translators

Summary/Abstract: The aim of the article is to discuss the perceptions surrounding translation and translators. Also, relying on the results of a study, it aims to investigate which competencies and skills young non-translators (high school and university students) consider most important for translators nowadays, and how they perceive changes in the translator’s image in the context of the widespread use of machine translation and artificial intelligence. The data was collected through a survey conducted via Google Forms. A total of 191 non-translators (139 gymnasium and 52 university students) participated in the survey. The responses were analyzed using qualitative content analysis.The findings generally support the conclusions of previous studies, which indicate that perceptions regarding translators and translation remain relatively unchanged, even in the context of artificial intelligence and machine translation use. However, variations in the responses reveal that high school and university students perceive the translator’s work differently – university students exhibit a slightly deeper understanding of the translation process and the professional nuances of the field.
