Identity Building among the Székelys 1867–1940

Summary/Abstract: The topic of the paper is the analysis of the evolution of the Székely identity building process in the period between 1867 and 1940. The most crucial tools of identity building typical for Eastern Europe are presented: language, modernization, memory of the past and myths of the past, like those of primordiality, ethnogenesis, kinship, suffering, unfair treatment, heroism, bravery. The second part of the paper highlights the process of discursive identity construction in the case of the Székelys with the help of the critical discourse analysis method.
