Summary/Abstract: The article sets the task of presenting the Christian reception and interpretation of earthquakes in early Byzantium (4th – 7th centuries). The text is divided into three parts. The first part examines the most widespread interpretation of earthquakes as a manifestation of God’s wrath. The second part is dedicated to one less frequently used explanatory model – the representation of quakes as a form of theodicy and divine pedagogy. The third part traces the interpretation of earthquakes as eschatological omens, which is a product of the specific psychological climate in Byzantium at the turn of the 5th and 6th centuries.
