Summary/Abstract: This article examines the representation of plants in Maria Graham’s Journal of a Residence in Chile, during the Year 1822. And a Voyage from Chile to Brazil in 1823 (published in 1824). Our analysis highlights how Graham perceived and described the Chilean flora using the European scientific and aesthetic discourses of her time, and compared it to the British and European flora. We argue that these comparisons represent forms of symbolic appropriation of South American nature. We also explore contradictions within the structure of the enunciating subject, stemming from Graham’s efforts to navigate or challenge the constraints faced by women writers of her era.
