Summary/Abstract: Literary texts written during the colonial period of Mauritius, around its independence, and more recently have shown a different perspective of humanism than that developed in Paul et Virginie by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, considered the foundation text for Mauritian francophone literature. However, humanism has veered towards a more specific one, called “Mauritian humanism” as shown by Marcel Cabon during the independence period, by establishing a form of unification of different ethnic groups and cultures in order to depart from divisions. Further in time, the term “coolitude” (coined by Khal Torabully) will show the plural writing of humanism as shaped in Nathacha Appanah’s novel, Les rochers de Poudre d’Or whereby the poetics of diversity will refer to the connection with diversity in an intercultural context. Marie-Thérèse Humbert will allow us to grasp the influence of humanism in relation to the Mauritian interculturality which includes distancing from the excessive ethnicisation.
