Summary/Abstract: This research explores the perceptions and evaluations of the word ‘creature’ in British modernist prose fiction. A corpus-assisted analysis of its contextual meanings and adjectival modifiers in modernist novels revealed a predominantly anthropocentric understanding of this word and its prevailing negative evaluation. However, the assessment of ‘creature’ varies across four identified referential categories, and female-creatures are more positively evaluated in comparison with other entities. My interdisciplinary approach, employed in this study, combines linguistic examination with elements of literary analysis in the exploration of the meaning and evaluation of the word ‘creature’.
