Summary/Abstract: The paper presents a review of the literature related to variants in Macedonian folk songs with the aim of forming a digital corpus of folk songs for algorithmic analyses of their similarities and their evolution. We present an awareness of the presence and importance of song variants even among the earliest collectors and scholars in the 19th and 20th centuries. This is part of a broader trend of collecting and studying variants of folk songs, including those of the South Slavs, which has given rise to new classifier models and theories in science, as well as a large number of publications with songs and variants.
