Summary/Abstract: This scientific contribution describes the current state of education, especially economic education, at Slovak universities, and the resulting level of economic knowledge in the country in a broader social context. The main goal of the contribution is to identify significant problems in the given area, to point out their causes, and to propose possible solutions. The methodology used is in the form of verbal argumentation emphasizing the importance of theoretical knowledge for understanding the reality and historical development of the issue being addressed. The results of the conducted research primarily point to the consequences of long-term insufficient funding of science, research, and education, but also to the inertia of the socialist mentality in viewing economic phenomena and contexts. The recommended solutions, or rather the conclusions of the survey, reflect the importance of economic theory for understanding the laws of economic life, as well as its role in the process of forming critical thinking of individuals, cultivating public discourse, and in the self-reflection of the entire society.
