Summary/Abstract: The main topic of this paper is to discuss some of the challenges presented to the translators when translating mostly literary works of art, or in other words, the works of art covered by the term ‘belles-lettres’. The topic is introduced with a very short description of the literary genres and their peculiarities, especially concentrating on the one of ‘belles-lettres’ and of the translation and interpretation techniques in general. After a short introduction of the translation challenges in most of the genres and fields of the use of the language (literary translation, legal documents, scientific style, interpretation, spoken language, etc.), the author describes the translation challenges more specifically in the literary genres. The challenges are divided into those which originate from the structure of the language, those that come from cultural differences, such as regarding figures of speech, phraseological expressions and other means that contribute to the liveliness of the narration, and of contextual use of expressions like exclamations, certain short expressions used contextually in sense of subjective response to certain events, to what is said by the interlocutor, etc. etc. At the end of the discussion, three actual translation challenges, i.e., three actual translations of literary classics are discussed.
