Digital Tools in the Context of Promoting the Saints Cyril and Methodius Cultural Route on Macedonian Territory

Summary/Abstract: The Council of Europe’s Cultural Route of Saints Cyril and Methodius offers a solid opportunity to celebrate the enduring legacy of these two missionaries who left a lasting mark on the formation of the Slavic languages, and thus on cultural identity. This route connects several Balkan and Central European cultural and historical sites, including churches, monasteries, monuments, and cultural centers of historical significance. To ensure the sustainability and attractiveness of this route for future generations, it is crucial to put together a comprehensive tourism strategy that would rely heavily on technology. This paper attempts to explore the potential for long-term popularization of the part of this route located on Macedonian soil by integrating digital tools, i.e. digital mapping technologies, web application creation, virtual and augmented reality, QR codes, blockchain, cryptocurrencies, NFT, Internet of Things (IoT) and other gamification tools, including social games, to encourage interactivity with and between tourists, with special attention paid to tools that support cultural-educational and artistic-entertainment elements.
