Summary/Abstract: In the cantos dedicated to angelic intelligences, Paradiso 28 and 29, Dante refers to contemplation and love as the two interpenetrating aspects of angelic blessedness. Dante expresses this binomial by using the terms veduta / vista and amore / affetto. The present paper focuses particularly on the notion of affetto, showing that Dante – elaborating on the thought of Dionysius the Areopagite, Thomas Aquinas, Boethius, and other medieval thinkers – assigns to this term three distinct yet interrelated meanings: natural desire, good will and beatific love – the three stages of the angels’ beatific union with the divine. Following their natural inclination toward the good, the angels contemplate God, freely partake in His grace, and ultimately experience the absolute love that moves the heavens and the entire cosmos.
