Summary/Abstract: This article aims to discuss the medical aid available to the poorest residents of the city, using the example of Poznań in the first half of the 19th century. During this period, modern hospitals began to operate in the city, including the municipal hospital and the Hospital of the Transfiguration, as well as specialized institutions such as the Elżbieta Maternity Institute. The city was also divided into districts where physicians for the poor provided medical care. Particularly significant was the work of Karol Marcinkowski and the Society for the Support of the Poor and Needy, which he founded in 1845, as well as the Charitable Society of Polish Ladies in Poznań, which collaborated with him. The activities of these organizations indicate that, above all, the poor in the city relied on grassroots assistance organized by charitable activists. At the same time, the forms of aid provided did not differ significantly from those in other Polish cities – similar initiatives were undertaken by the Vilnius Charitable Society and the Warsaw Charitable Society. This article is based on official government records, reports from medical institutions, and records maintained by the Charitable Society of Polish Ladies.
